Ed Sheeran Castle on the Hill VS. Shape of You: Which is better?

It’s no secret that Ed Sheeran is the most adorable thing on the planet and right now he is absolutely killing it! Right now he has 2 songs in the Top 10 on iTunes, one of which is at number one. Both of these songs are available on his new album “Divide.” So I thought it would be fun to dive into both of these songs and figure out which one is better.

Shape Of You

Let’s start with the one topping iTunes, Shape of You.  Based off of just the lyrics, I already don’t like it (well this isn’t going well). It’s just another song about a girl and a guy finding “love” in a club…. because that is original. Not to mention the intro sounds like a cheesy iPhone ringtone (I’m sorry Ed). The chorus is a little disappointing because this is normally where the music slightly changes and/or becomes more dramatic. However, I know his style is normally very raw and comparing him to other artists (pretty much all of them) that like an overly dramatic chorus.

Back to the lyrics, since the music is annoying… the lyrics are incredibly repetitive and there really isn’t a lot of story going into this song. This guy meets a girl at a club and they like each other and go out on a date, then afterward make out in the back of a taxi. The rest of the song is just this:

“Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on”

C’mon Ed I expected so much more.

Closer vs Sorry Mash Up

Castle on a Hill

This song is currently number 7 on iTunes, and if you haven’t listened to it, here’s the link.  This song, based on the lyrics, actually has an actual story about a boy (I’m assuming Ed) and how he grew up. Which is a really lovely way to write a song. However, it’s a lot like “Once I Was 7 Years Old” by Lukas Graham.

Ed: ” When I was six years old I broke my leg…”

Lukas: ” Once I was seven years old, my mama told me…”

Ed: “Fifteen years old and smoking hand-rolled cigarettes…”

Lukas: ” Once I was eleven years old, my daddy told me…”

Obviously, they are not exactly the same but for the first and second verse they start off by referring to their age. Other than that they song is pretty original. I mean they both talk about struggles during their childhood but who doesn’t?

This song actually as a story and it has that dramatic chorus that I love so much. No lie if a song has a good chorus the chances of me liking it go up unbelievably. I really love songs with meaning and good music which is why the clear winner ( at least to me) is Castle on a Hill. It is just better.

I guess I am sick of those boring, shallow club songs that are obviously super popular right now.

Winner: Castle On A Hill
