What is Buy n Large?
Buy n Large is a fictional company of the Pixar Universe. You will see BnL products in just about every Pixar Movie, most famously Wall-e. According to The History of Buy n Large, the corporation got its start as a maker of frozen yogurt called “Buy Yogurt.” Later on, the business eventually started buying other large industries and eventually became know an internet marketing service corporation named Buy n’ Large.
In 2057, Buy n Large became a worldwide leader in the fields of aerospace, agriculture, construction, consumer goods, corporate grooming, Earth transport, electronics, energy, engineering, finance, food services, fusion research, government, hydro-power, infrastructures, media, medical science, mortgage loans, pet care, pharmaceuticals, psychotherapies, ports and harbors, real estate, repairs, retail, robotics, science/health, space, storage, super centers, super grids, travel services, utilities, and watermills. So basically everything. Eventually, other companies that were not owned by BnL wanted to be. For example, a company named Headr Inc. wanted to be bought out by BnL which then gave the company control over news headlines.
How is Google Like Buy n Large?
Buy n Large eventually got to the point where they were in control of everything and everybody. So naturally the fear of this happening in real life is feasible but how feasible?
The closest thing to a Buy n Large that we have is Google. Why? Well, we already know that Google is essentially watching our every move. Every time we use the internet through Google Chrome, Google Search, or a Google Advertising Partner that info is being tracked. On top of that Google has been paving the way for future inventions and breakthroughs with projects like Google Glass, Google Driverless Cars, Google DeepMind, Google Fiber, Smart Contacts, the Liftware Spoon, Project Skybender, Project Soli, and much more. Google is arguably the leader in technology, science, health, and advertising.
Clearly, this list is not as long as Buy n Large’s but who is going to stop them from expanding even more?
Is This a Bad Thing?
Let’s say that Google follows in the footsteps of Buy n Large and becomes a worldwide monopoly. Is that a bad thing? The fear of monopolies is that if one company controls all of the oil, for example, they can charge whatever they want for it. So to ensure that doesn’t happen we force companies to compete against each other to keep the prices down and the economy from inevitably collapsing. Well, what if that company didn’t just control all the oil, but everything… literally. A company that single-handily controlled the entire world and everything about it. Would that be such a bad thing?
We see a little bit how that would work in Wall-e and to be honest, it doesn’t look all that bad. Now obviously they destroy the whole planet because they were environmentally challenged, but would it be so bad to live in the world (space ship) they were living in? The biggest problems that faced the characters in Wall-e were the environmental factors and the physical factors. Meaning the Earth was dead, everyone was fat, and 1 robot took over the ship which are three things that can be avoided if the whole world is automated like it was in Wall-e.
How Do We Not End Up Like the Wall-e Movie?
Let’s tackle problem number one: the Earth is dead. Yes, this is quite the problem and truth be told it’s one that we are already struggling with. If the Earth became automated like it was in Wall-e the simple solution to this problem would be to make everything eco-friendly. Which in Wall-e they kind of already figured out how to do that. Wall-e himself is solar powered. However, the giant Wall-e’s were throwing trash into space which isn’t a great idea but I don’t have all the answers.
Problem number two: People are fat. Well, people are already fat. So in order to make people healthier and not come close to what we saw in Wall-e the simple solution is to automate exercise and diet. If you can control what people are eating and when the are exercising you pretty much eliminate that problem.
The movie Wall-e came out in 2007 which was at the same time “Super Size Me” came out (2004). Which was a documentary of what would happen to a perfectly healthy adult if he ate only McDonalds for a year? The documentary was supposed to be an exaggeration of what is happening to people who ate it often and how bad it was for you. Wall-e was the Pixar version. The movie essentially showed us what would happen if we continued down the path we were on. Since then the world is getting healthier and more eco-friendly.
The Robot Problem
Perhaps the biggest problem that has an unknown solution is the robot problem. Every few months tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Apple, and Microsoft are coming out with Smart Home devices to make our everyday lives easier and more automated. These devices are great and very unlikely to turn against us. However, the topic of artificial intelligence is not one to be taken lightly. If you create a machine that can “learn” you are charting in dangerous waters. This was the problem that we saw with “Auto,” the Auto Pilot of the Axiom. However, Auto was programmed to never return to Earth so technically he never “turned” on the humans because he was programmed that way.
