Apple released their new iPhone models that are set to hit the market in the coming months. The iPhone X is going to be available November 13, 2017, and they are available for Pre-Order Oct. 27, 2017. Whereas the iPhone 8 is available Sept. 22, 2017, and Pre-Ordering starts Sept. 15, 2017. So the questions many people are asking is “Are these phones really worth it?” Honestly, it depends on who you ask. Loyal Apple fans will be lined up the date of release, waiting in long lines and camping out the night before. Whereas us normal people are left debating if the $800 price tag for the iPhone 8 is really worth it or even the $1000 price tag for the iPhone X.
I am going to go ahead and say the iPhone X is not worth it at all and I would not even consider buying it. The iPhone 8, on the other hand, may be worth in a few months when the price inevitably comes down. So what are the differences between all these iPhones and are they really as innovative as Apple claims?
The iPhone X
This iPhone is the considered to be the most technologically advanced iPhone on the market and Apple’s new tagline for these new phones is “Welcome to the Future” or “Say hello to the future.”
The iPhone X features an “all-new 5.8-inch Super Retina screen fills the hand and dazzles the eyes.” Basically, the whole thing is a screen, you know like the Samsung Galaxy S8. In my opinion, I think the Galaxy does the full-screen effect better since the have the curved edge and it really looks like the entire phone is a screen. Whereas the iPhone still has a border around the entire phone.
This is the thing that the Galaxy S8 has. Are you starting to see a pattern here? Now I don’t know who has the better face recognition technology because if you ask either company they are going to claim that they are better. So we will just have to wait and see. If I had to take a guess, I would say they are about the same. The Apple Face ID is also programmed to adjust to your changing features which is pretty cool, even though your face really isn’t going to change in a year… you know when the next iPhone comes out? Also I big problem I see with this feature and maybe someone with the Galaxy S8 can comment on this… but how does the phone recognize your face in the dark? If you can’t sleep at 3 am and want to scroll through Facebook are you just SOL?
Apple also has the Face ID set up so you can pay with your face. If you have entrusted Apple with your credit card info in the Apple Wallet you can now pay with your face… which is weird. I mean I am all for the future but really how secure is that? What if you have an evil twin? Will the twin be able to use your phone, wallet, and everything else?
New Camera Modes
That’s right the selfies are evolving too! The front facing camera features new modes for selfies… what a time to be alive. They now have Portrait Lighting which slightly changes the lighting on your selfies. Woo. It also features Studio Light, Contour Light, and the Stage Light. All of these lighting effects work the same as a filter on Instagram or Snapchat.
The biggest addition to the camera is the Animoji feature. “The TrueDepth camera analyzes more than 50 different muscles movements to mirror your expressions in 12 Animoji. Reveal your inner panda, pig, or robot.” So you can make the emoji move and talk…. it’s exactly like the Snapchat filters but with Emoji’s. Which isn’t that what we all wanted? Now we can make a second Emoji movie even worst than the first one, which will be difficult, but it is a challenge I will accept. Honestly though this sounds like glitch city.
“The wide-angle and telephoto cameras on iPhone X enable optical zoom, as well as digital zoom of up to 10x for photos and 6x for videos.” Now the average white girl has the ability to take breath taking images of their Starbucks coffee. Look as great as the camera is, I am going to be that most people will not even use half of the stuff on it. I don’t use half the stuff on my iPhone 6s and I’m a photographer.
“The most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone, with a neural engine that’s capable of up to 600 billion operations per second.” Personally, I think that is a little over board but Apple claims that it is 70% faster than the A10 Fusion which is in the iPhone 7. The battery is also supposed to last 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7.
I’m not even going to touch on this because it is exactly like Snapchat and Apple is playing catch up yet again.
Galaxy phones have been wirelessly charging forever now so yet again, Apple is catching up. Honestly, this is the only feature of the new iPhone models that is intriguing to me. Even though this is not new technology.
The iPhone 8
Basically, a twisted love child of the iPhone X and the iPhone 7 that costs $800. Slightly better camera… bigger screen. The end.
With the announcement of the new iPhones, I don’t see any new technology just tech. that we already had in other places like Instagram, Snapchat, and The Galaxy S8, are now on the iPhone. The iPhone X and 8 are not worth what they are asking in my opinion. In all honesty, if my 6s never broke I would probably never consider buying the new iPhone.
I think what makes me so mad is these companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung don’t make their products to last which forces you to buy the newest model. My iPhone 6s has a white line of dead pixels going down the side of it and it is only a year old. They make them so fragile and breakable that you are lucky if you make it 2 years when your contract runs up and you are eligible for an upgrade.
So when the time comes for me to get a new phone, I am either going with the iPhone 7 or 8. The iPhone X is just too packed full of useless features I will never use and they are going to charge me out the ass for them. So no thank you.
