Halloween is the time for all things scary, spooky, and down-right disturbing to rear their ugly heads and be celebrated. So in the spirit of Halloween, I came up with a list of my Top 5 Favorite Halloween / Horror Movies I love to watch every year! These movies/shows are not listed in order of importance… just the order that my mind thought of them. To be honest I love them each so much I could argue for each of them to be No. 1.
1. The Lore – Amazon Prime
This is actually a brand new Amazon Prime series that is based on a fantastic podcast. This series basically explores the backstories of things like vampires, werewolves, lobotomies, and so much more. The stories are paired with live reenactments to add to the drama and suspense. The best part of this series is all of it is based on real events and experiences and it is absolutely fascinating. This series isn’t scary… well it isn’t littered with jumpscares, but it will definitely give you the creeps.
I love this horror movie because of the great similarities to Slenderman. Essentially, there is a pale-faced man who lives in the forest who wears a suit and kidnaps children. However, before he takes the children he makes them kill their entire family… so not a family-friendly movie you should watch with the kids unless you want to scar them for all eternity. There are actually two of these movies and the second one a little edgier, so if you don’t like the first one you will most certainly not like the second one.
3. Get Out
This is a newer horror movie as well, but I don’t know if I would consider it a horror movie. I mean what they do in this movie is horrible, but it’s wasn’t that scary. Don’t get me wrong it had a few jump scares but I would consider it to be more of a psychological thriller. The whole movie you are trying to figure out what is going on. You know something is off but you just can’t figure out what it is until the amazing Jordan Peele (writer/ director) wants you to. This movie also touched on racial issues and reminded all of us where these racial issues derived from in a modern setting. 10/10 would watch again. I actually wrote another blog post about this movie, and you can read it here.
4. The Conjuring
I love a good ghost story, and I also love when said ghost story is based off a true story. This movie came out during the time when paranormal movies were at their peak and movies like Paranormal Activity were killing it. However, this movie took ghost stories to a whole new level. I honestly don’t know how to describe it, because you really just have to watch it. I don’t want to give anything away. Essentially, a family moves into a new house and they are tormented by a demon and they seek the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
5. Mickey’s House of Villians
As a true Disney nerd, I had to through this one in there, because if you remember the House of Mouse you know that this Halloween Special was the best thing to happen to your childhood. In this movie, Mickey owns a nightclub called the House of Mouse where, in this episode, he shows clips of cute Halloween themed shorts made by Disney. Then the classic Disney Villians get reckless and take over the House and turn it into the House of Villians, so Mickey and his friends have to fight to get it back. It is a great movie and I have to watch it every year.
6. It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!
I know I said this was a “Top 5” but after I made this list, the Charlie Brown Halloween special came on TV and I had to add it to the list. You can’t go a single Halloween without watching this classic!
